Ethics, Safeguarding and Statement of Purpose

1. Members should respect the creations of others; ideas from lectures are offered as ideas on which to expand and encourage one’s own creativity. Material from someone else’s program is generally not regarded as material to take intact and add to your own performance.
2. Members should strive to protect the secrets of magic tricks/illusions from the general public. This includes the publishing of magical secrets, as well as teaching or exposing magical secrets without the express rights of the inventor or creator.
3. Members should strive for excellence in wardrobe and make-up as well as performance. Their character and wardrobe should be as individualised as possible. As a representative of the variety arts, one should strive to dress in appropriate clean and neat attire unless the character is meant to be unkempt or shabby.
4. Members should maintain their Christian standard and/or witness at all times.
5. Members should never video or audio tape, (or record by any other means of retrieval), another person’s program without specific permission from the performer. The material recorded shall be used only for the purpose for which the permission is granted.
6. Members should not advertise or distribute items or routines of which they have no commercial rights. All sales and distribution of products and other materials should be done within the proper guidelines, and with respect for the convention personnel, regardless of whether or not it is an Christian Magicians UK event.
7. Members need to be aware of the humane treatment of live animals used in their programs and practice such treatment with their animals.

All members, parents, guardians and carers are to comply with Christian Magicians UK policies and guidelines for the promotion of welfare and care of children. Definitions:

• A junior member is defined as being under 18 years of age.
  
• A responsible adult is defined as a member or parent/guardian who has the clearance, experience, knowledge and training commensurate with the type and degree of supervision required
• Junior members must be supervised at all times by a responsible adult. The level of supervision is to be suitable to the junior member’s age, maturity, capabilities and levels of experience
• No child or vulnerable adult shall undertake any activity which might place him or her at risk. In any event prior consultation with their parent, guardian or carer must take place if there is any doubt on the member’s abilities to undertake a specific activity.
• No member is to be expected to assume responsibility for a child or a vulnerable adult.
• Notwithstanding the requirements of the previous paragraph, should a member discover a junior member or vulnerable adult that is unsupervised then he/she must assume responsibility for that person’s safety in the first instance. The situation should then be rectified as soon as possible by seeking out the parent, guardian, carer or nominated supervisor. Any instance of such an occurrence is to be reported to the Christian Magicians UK committee as soon as possible and a record made of the occurrence.
• Whilst supervising children or vulnerable adults, it is advisable that two adults be present, these members should avoid placing themselves in a position that could be open to misinterpretation or question in accordance with our policy. Remember, the policy is there to protect you as well as children and vulnerable adults.
• Should any member, parent, guardian, carer or the person themselves have concerns about the welfare of children or vulnerable adults then he or she is to contact the Welfare officer or any Trustee using the contact details on the website
• All members are required to respect the rights and dignity of children and adults and to promote their welfare. Caring is largely a matter of common sense provided everyone is clear on what is expected of them and a few simple principles are adhered to. It is not a responsibility to be feared but is, nevertheless, essential if we are to ensure that we are to be a Christian Magicians UK that offers opportunities for all.

Whilst Christian Magicians UK has a moral and statutory duty to take all reasonable steps to ensure the general welfare and protection of all children and adult members, Christian Magicians UK will not act as guardians or carers.
